Assessments of online training

I have spent the last week talking to a very large Midwest utility about their current training and am astounded on little they think of assessing and evaluating their training. “‘Smile sheets’ are a waste of time”, said one senior manager.

More disturbing is that most of their training is never validated.

So I am left with the two following questions:

1. How do you know if your online training is effective? In other words, are the learners learning anything?

2. How can the training be improved upon if you don’t known what is wrong.

Obviously they likely is the effects are training can be observed through other means (such as less calls into the Call Center). However, in my opinion, there is no better may to measure training effectiveness than by using a good tool and measuring it.
